This is a great question. The reality is that your dogs body and your body for that matter produces these glycosaminoglycans on their own to meet the normal demands of normal joint health. It is not until the natural production can not keep up with the joints demands that supplementing makes sense. That said it then really all depends on the degree of joint health problems that your dog has. When it comes to glucosamine/chondroitin supplementation the reality is you really can’t overdose your dog per say. All of the topdog joint health products have been formulated based on weight to assist/meet and exceeded the joints health requirements. In many cases MORE does not always mean better. The focus really needs to shift towards a complete and comprehensive management. There is simply more to complete joint health than glucosamine and chondroitin alone.
Hi Dr. St. Clair,
Your website and rehab videos are great. Thank you! What is the optimal glucosamine/chondroitin ratio? It seems that all the supplements on the market have a different ratio.
Thank you,
Karen
Thank you! I am looking forward to the continued videos and hopefully blogs on this subject since my dog just had her second ACL surgery this past week and the Doctor said her right leg is filled with arthritis. I just started her on your GlycanAid HA. The Doctor has her on Rimadyl but I am not happy with the long term effects of keeping her on that and won’t do it long term. Any ideas or suggestions while I wait for the video and research this disease would be extremely welcomed.
Ret..We are actually in the process or filming and editing that video right now.
Where is the second part of the video. I can’t seem to find it :( I feel like this is a cliff hanger!
Sandi this is a great question and a topic I need to spend more time discussing as an alternative option. There are two companies that I know of that grow and harvest these in conjunction with certified veterinarians. They are http://www.medivet-america.com and https://www.vet-stem.com. I became certified several years back and worked on a number of cases. By all means this is not for everyone and you really need to seek out a veterinarian in your area who has performed several cases at least. The reason I say it is not for everyone is really due to financial limitation. Between the initial harvesting of fat cells, which is a surgical procedure, to the processing cost of the cells and then you have to purchase the individual doses from these companies it can run upwards of $3000.00. Dont get me wrong nearly all of my cases improved to some degree, some significant for that matter, but for $3000 I could provided some incredible physical conditioning and therapy with a multitude of modalities, get your dog on the right natural products and provided a longer lasting more holistic approach.
I’m looking for more information/experience on stem cell replacement for arthritic dogs. Any personal stories or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
