In Week 9, we focus on activities to enhance your dog’s strength, balance, and mobility. These exercises—Stair Work, Supervised Off-Leash or Long-Leash Activity, and Jogging—are designed to push recovery to the next level while ensuring safety and control.
WEEK 9: Advanced Strength and Mobility Training
1. Stair Work
Purpose: To build strength, balance, and coordination.
How to Perform:
- Start Slowly: Begin with a few steps up and down.
- Leashed and Supported: Always keep your dog on a leash. If additional support is needed, use a towel or harness under their belly.
- Progress Gradually: As your dog becomes more confident, increase the number of stairs and the frequency of this exercise.
- Safety First: Do not allow your dog to go up or down stairs unsupervised or off-leash. It’s still too early for independent stair use.
2. Supervised Off-Leash or Long-Leash Activity
You should always check with your veterinarian first to make sure that it is okay for your dog to have some off-leash time while being supervised of course. However, if you know that your dog cannot be stopped from jumping or chasing a ball, another dog, squirrel, etc. DO NOT allow him to be off-leash yet!
3. Jogging
Purpose: To build muscle strength and mass through controlled bursts of movement.
How to Perform:
- While on a walk, jog with your dog for 20 feet at a time.
- Stop and allow your dog to recover.
- Repeat this exercise 3-4 times a day.
- Monitor your dog for signs of fatigue or discomfort and adjust the intensity as needed.
Week 9 Takeaway
This week’s exercises are designed to challenge your dog’s progress while maintaining control and preventing setbacks. By incorporating Stair Work, Supervised Off-Leash or Long-Leash Activity, and Jogging, you’ll help your dog continue building strength, balance, and confidence. Stay patient and consistent—your dog is steadily advancing toward full recovery! 🐾
